The idea of eating 30 different plant foods a week has become one of the most repeated pieces of gut-health advice. It is a useful prompt to think about dietary variety, but it should not be treated as a medical rule or a precise threshold everyone must reach.
Where the number came from
The figure is commonly linked to the American Gut Project, a large citizen-science microbiome study published in 2018. Researchers found that participants who reported eating more than 30 different plant foods per week tended to have greater gut-microbiome diversity than those reporting fewer than 10.
That was an association in an observational study. It did not prove that 30 is a magic number, that 29 is inadequate or that increasing plant variety alone will produce a specific health outcome.
What counts as a plant?
In discussions of the study, the category is broader than vegetables. Fruit, whole grains, beans, pulses, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices can all contribute to dietary variety.
That makes the idea more practical than trying to eat 30 different vegetables, but it also shows why the number is better used as a diversity prompt than a strict target.
Why variety can still be useful
Different plant foods provide different fibres and nutrients, and a varied diet is consistent with mainstream healthy-eating advice. But gut health is influenced by many factors, and microbiome science is still developing. A diverse microbiome is not a simple diagnostic measure of health.
People with digestive disorders, allergies or other medical needs may also require individual dietary advice rather than pursuing a high-variety target.
The sensible takeaway
If the ’30 plants’ idea encourages someone to rotate grains, add beans, try different vegetables or include nuts and seeds, it can be a helpful framework. There is little reason to become anxious about reaching an exact weekly score.
For most people, the broader principle is more useful: aim for a varied, balanced diet and treat specific numerical challenges as optional tools rather than medical prescriptions.
